What was preserved may be followed again.

Ariadne's thread acquires its full function only upon return.

What was carried into the Labyrinth becomes the means by which passage through the Labyrinth may be recovered. The same relation encountered during descent is encountered differently when followed outward.

Nothing about the Labyrinth has been erased.

The turns remain turns.
Distance remains distance.
Complexity remains complexity.

But the field is no longer encountered without relation.

Recovery does not require reversal of what occurred.
It requires a recoverable relation through what occurred.

THE RETURN

VIOLA concerns the passage by which preserved relation becomes usable again.

The thread does not pull the traveler home. It does not compel the direction of travel. It does not become sovereign over the person who follows it.

It remains available.

Recognition permits orientation. Orientation permits movement. Movement permits renewed encounter with what had passed beyond sight.

What was findable becomes found.

This is why recovery is not restoration to an untouched prior state.

The traveler who returns is not the traveler who entered.

The traversed field has become part of the path.

What matters is that change has not destroyed the relation necessary to account for the passage.

THROUGH VIOLA

A recoverable sign may mediate passage without governing what passes.

Its success does not enlarge its authority.

The thread may lead to the threshold and still remain only a thread.

VIOLA preserves that proportion.

The sign survives.
The relation is recognized.
Passage may continue.
